Announcement
As of July 1, 2011, our two-year-old Deaf Families with Children Program has closed due to the elimination of program funding as a result of government budget cuts. We continue to serve children and adults who are Deaf/HOH and their families--as we have for more than 20 years--through specialized counseling and family support services.
We are grateful to the individuals and businesses who supported our Deaf Families with Children Program. Their support helped us to make the activities so special for participants of all ages.
Our Deaf Families with Children Program was funded for two years (2009-2011) through the City of San Jose’s Healthy Neighborhoods Venture Fund (HNVF), which administers dollars the City receives through the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement, is an agreement between certain cities (including San José), 46 States and the major tobacco companies regarding the marketing and consumption of tobacco products. The Deaf Families with Children Program significantly expanded local support for families with a parent or child who is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (Deaf/HOH), an underserved community.
The program served more than 50 local families (more than 60 children) each year. Participants included school-age children who are Deaf/HOH, children of Deaf adults (CODAs), and monolingual Spanish-speaking parents with children who are Deaf/HOH.
These parents and children participated in weekly Family Workshops, which included education about healthy family communication, nutrition, smoking prevention, and resources for the Deaf/HOH community, and sit down meals for the whole family.
The weekly After-School Program sessions included time to work on and get help with homework, healthy snacks, and activities designed to enhance self-esteem and to build social and communication skills. The children in the After-School regularly enjoyed guest speakers and arts and craft activities, and we took the kids on monthly field trips. The program culmination each year has been two weekend Family Kamps at KOA in Watsonville.
All of these services were provided at no-cost to the low-income families we served—thanks to the generosity shown to us by community friends, including:
