Families with a Child who is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing Invited to Join Family Program
Free program is for families living in San Jose

Release Date: February 12, 2010

[San Jose]  San Jose families with a child who is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (HOH) are invited to join a free program featuring after-school programming for children and workshops for parents. This program is presented by Family & Children Services, an area nonprofit organization, which has served children and adults who are Deaf or HOH for more than 20 years. The City of San Jose Healthy Neighborhoods Venture Fund makes possible these free family services.

Children in the after-school program participate in arts and crafts, health and fitness, and other fun activities. All activities are designed to promote social skills, communication, teamwork, and health, and have been developed specifically for children who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing. The after-school program meets once a week. Once a month the children go on field trips to area sites.

Parents with a child who is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing are invited to participate in weekly parent workshops, which will meet until May 5th and restart in the fall. Workshops provide an opportunity to learn about topics of interest to parents of Deaf children, as well as to connect with other local families.

To participate in the after-school and parent workshop sessions, families must live in San Jose and have a child who is elementary-school aged and Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing. For more information and to sign up, please contact program coordinator Evette Ybarra at eybarra@fcservices.org, 408-200-8618, or (videophone) 408-899-5207. Information about this program as well as all of Family & Children Services’ programs is available at www.fcservices.org.

Funding for this program is generously provided by the City of San Jose's Healthy Neighborhoods Venture Fund, FIRST 5 Santa Clara County, and individual donations. Monte Vista Gardens Senior Housing kindly provides space for program sessions.
