Palo Alto, CA - March 29, 2011 -  The 8th Annual Circle of Support Breakfast benefiting Family & Children Services will feature bestselling author Ayelet Waldman as keynote speaker. Ms. Waldman’s topic at the May 5 event will be “Monkey Bars and Mood Swings: The Journey of a Bipolar Mother.” The event, which will be held from 8am-10:30am at the Crowne Plaza Cabaña Hotel, 4290 El Camino Real in Palo Alto, will include recognition of Dr. Victor G. Carrion, the 2011 Circle of Support honoree. John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn are the event’s lead underwriters.

Ayelet Waldman is the author of Red Hook Road; The New York Times bestseller Bad Mother: A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities and Occasional Moments of Grace; Love and Other Impossible Pursuits; Daughter’s Keeper; and the Mommy-Track Mysteries. Her personal essays have been published in a wide variety of newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Vogue, Parenting, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. Ms. Waldman has written several times about her 2002 diagnosis of bipolar disorder, a disease that runs in her family, and has spoken publicly on parenting while having a mental illness.

Dr. Victor G. Carrion, the Circle of Support honoree, is an Associate Professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, Director of the Stanford Early Life Stress Research Program, and on the faculty at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. His research has focused on understanding how early life stress, such as traumatic experiences, alters behavior and emotion and the role of brain structure and function in these findings.

The 2011 Circle of Support Breakfast is co-chaired by Barbara E. Jones and Adrienne Ortega. Additional sponsors include Borel Private Bank & Trust Company, Barbara and John Glynn, Susan and Bill Friedman, Barbara Jones, and Tasneem Ismailji and Bala Manian.

Proceeds from the Circle of Support Breakfast will benefit Family & Children Services’ counseling and prevention programs for children, teens, and adults in Silicon Valley. Family & Children Services provides a circle of counseling, caring, and support, particularly for those who might not otherwise be able to afford care. Through counseling and prevention services, children and adults cope effectively with depression, addiction, and chronic mental or physical illness; families heal from domestic violence and child abuse; and our community’s veterans, LGBTQ youth, and young people emerging from the foster care system into independence receive specialized support.
