Cynthia Gunn, Local Community Leader and Philanthropist, To Receive Honor
Palo Alto, CA -- Community leader and philanthropist Cynthia Fry Gunn will be honored for her outstanding contributions to the community at the Third Annual Circle of Support Breakfast in Palo Alto on May 3, 2006. The honor will be presented by Family & Children Services as part of its annual benefit event.
Mrs. Gunn, who lives in Palo Alto, served with dedication on the Board of Directors of Family & Children Services from 1998-2004 and continues as a member of the agency’s Advisory Board. She is a steadfast backer of the agency and its work providing health and human services in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
Mrs. Gunn is deeply committed to educational excellence, the arts, and the welfare of the community, and has devoted countless hours to local organizations. She has been an active volunteer in both public and private schools in Palo Alto. With her husband, John A. Gunn, she is a generous benefactor of both Castilleja School and Stanford University. The Gunns have supported undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships at Stanford.
Mrs. Gunn is an ardent supporter of the San Francisco Opera. She and her husband have sponsored several productions, including Le Grand Macabre and La Forza del Destino, and are the sponsors of the newly commissioned opera, Appomattox, by composer Philip Glass.
Ms. Gunn serves on the campaign cabinet of the Lucile S. Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, where she and her husband have endowed the chair for the Director of Pediatric Surgery and have established a fund for cancer and stem cell research. She recently joined the Board of Stanford’s Hoover Institution.
In addition to the honor for Mrs. Gunn, the breakfast event features keynote speaker Dr. Robert M. Sapolsky, professor of biological sciences and neurology at Stanford University, and a research associate with The Primate Institute in Kenya.
