FAMILY & CHILDREN SERVICES AT ASL EXPO, SAN JOSE ON MAY 5th
Agency Highlights Mental Health Services for the
Deaf & Hard of Hearing at San Jose Event
[San Jose, CA] Family & Children Services, the San Mateo and Santa Clara county-serving health and human services agency, will have a table at the upcoming ASL (American Sign Language) Expo on May 5, 2007 at Parkside Hall in San Jose. The event is free to the public and will offer resources and workshops for children and adults who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, their family members and friends, and others interested in increasing their knowledge.
ASL Expo is a trade show targeted to the sign language community, with an emphasis on bringing together the Deaf and the hearing communities. The purpose of the Expo is to educate consumers, establish material visibility, and generate sales leads for exhibitors of all kinds, including video relay services, wireless communications, interpreter services, American Sign Language video distributors, baby sign video distributors, and any other businesses that want to market their products and services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing consumers.
Family & Children Services is the only provider of mental health services to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in Santa Clara County. In addition to counseling services for children and for adults, the staff works with families to improve communication and to prevent abuse. At schools with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, the agency’s DEAF (Dealing Effectively with Abuse in Families) program provides support groups for students, teaches children to stay safe, and conducts home visits.
“More than 92% of children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing are born to parents who can hear. Our goal is to support these parents, so they can build communication with their children and understand the strategies to raise a healthy and happy child,” said Evette Ybarra, ASW, a therapist in Family & Children Services’ Deaf & Hard of Hearing Program.
Through funding from FIRST 5 Santa Clara County, the staff provides free referrals and home visits for families in the county with children through the age of five.
