Palo Alto, CA -- “Women Who Light the Dark“ is the keynote topic of the sixth annual Circle of Support Breakfast, a benefit for Family & Children Services. The breakfast takes place Thursday, May 7 from 8-10:30 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza Cabaña Hotel in Palo Alto. Acclaimed photojournalist Paola Gianturco will share stories and photos of women around the world making changes in their communities. Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen will be honored for her philanthropic leadership. Tickets are $75 each.
For the past twelve years, photojournalist Paola Gianturco has documented women’s lives in forty countries and created four books of her photographs as philanthropic projects. Her fourth and latest book, Women Who Light the Dark, showcases inspirational women who are solving the most difficult social issues in their communities. Ms. Gianturco’s work was recently exhibited at UNESCO in Paris as part of the International Women’s Day celebration.
Also at the breakfast, community leader and philanthropist Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen will be honored. Ms. Arrillaga-Andreessen is the founder of Silicon Valley Social Venture Fund (SV2), a venture philanthropy that leverages its partners’ financial, intellectual, and human capital to impact the local and global nonprofit community. Co-founder and Advisory Board Chairman of the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, Arrillaga-Andreessen is a faculty member at Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford University, where she has created and teaches Stanford’s first courses on Strategic Philanthropy. She is Director of the Arrillaga Foundation, which supports education and community development in Silicon Valley.
Major underwriting support of the event is provided by Susan and Bill Friedman, John and Barbara Glynn, and Sereno Group Real Estate. Susan Friedman of Atherton is the event chair.
This year’s event will feature a Fund-A-Need auction to benefit Family & Children Services’ work with at-risk youth. Services that will benefit include on-campus counseling services, like skills education for youth preparing to age out of foster care, and mental health services.
Family & Children Services serves San Mateo and Santa Clara counties through a diverse array of health and human services. More than 7,000 children, youth, and adults participate in its mental health, family support, substance abuse treatment, on-campus counseling, family violence and abuse prevention programs each year. In 2008, Family & Children Services marked 60 years of building strong, safe, and self-sufficient individuals and families in Silicon Valley.
