Tickets Available to See Bestselling Author Ayelet Waldman at May 5 Circle of Support Breakfast  Benefiting Family & Children Services

Palo Alto, CA – April 26, 2011 -  Bipolar disorder has been in the news of late as celebrities, including Catherine Zeta-Jones and Demi Lovato, have acknowledged having the mental health condition. On May 5 in Palo Alto, bestselling author Ayelet Waldman, who writes and speaks about her experience as a parent with bipolar disorder, will speak on “Monkey Bars and Mood Swings: The Journey of a Bipolar Mother.” She will appear as part of the 8th Annual Circle of Support Breakfast benefiting Family & Children Services. The event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Cabana Hotel in Palo Alto from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Tickets are available. May is Mental Health Month.

The Circle of Support Breakfast will also honor Dr. Victor G. Carrion, an Associate Professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, Director of the Stanford Early Life Stress Research Program, and on the faculty at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. His research has focused on understanding how early life stress, such as traumatic experiences, alters behavior and emotion and the role of brain structure and function in these findings.

The 2011 Circle of Support Breakfast is co-chaired by Barbara E. Jones and Adrienne Ortega. John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn are the event’s lead underwriters. Additional sponsors include Borel Private Bank & Trust Company, Barbara and John Glynn, Susan and Bill Friedman, Barbara E. Jones, and Tasneem Ismailji and Bala Manian.

Proceeds from the Circle of Support Breakfast will benefit Family & Children Services’ counseling and prevention programs for children, teens, and adults in Silicon Valley. Family & Children Services provides a circle of counseling, caring, and support, particularly for those who might not otherwise be able to afford care.

Ayelet Waldman is the author of Red Hook Road; The New York Times bestseller Bad Mother: A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities and Occasional Moments of Grace; Love and Other Impossible Pursuits; Daughter’s Keeper; and the Mommy-Track Mysteries. Her personal essays have been published in a wide variety of newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Vogue, Parenting, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. Ms. Waldman has written several times about her 2002 diagnosis of bipolar disorder, a condition that runs in her family, and has spoken publicly on parenting while having a mental illness.
