Dr. Robert Sapolsky and Cynthia Fry Gunn Draw Crowd to 3rd Annual Circle of Support Breakfast

Palo Alto, CA  --  On May 3rd, a full ballroom of guests gathered at the Crowne Plaza Cabana Hotel in Palo Alto for the 3rd Annual Circle of Support Breakfast to celebrate Cynthia Fry Gunn and to learn from Dr. Robert Sapolsky “why zebras don’t get ulcers.”

The breakfast, which benefited Family & Children Services, drew guests from throughout the Peninsula and South Bay and grew by 100 guests over the previous year.  The highly-regarded Dr. Sapolsky, professor of biological sciences and neurology at Stanford University and research associate with the Institute of Primate Research in Kenya, is known for making science both accessible and entertaining. During his hour-long talk, Dr. Sapolsky had the audience bursting into laughter and also thoughtfully considering stress in their lives and the effect it has on their health.

The volunteer planning committee, chaired by Pat Gregory of Menlo Park, decorated the tables with yellow gerbera daisies, zebra plants and zebra-striped table overlays. Several guests dressed in zebra-striped jackets or scarves, inspired by the keynote address topic, “Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers,” which was taken from the title of one of Dr. Sapolsky’s books on stress, stress-related disease, and coping.

Early in the program, Jeanne C. Labozetta, LMFT, MBA, President and CEO of Family & Children Services, proclaimed local philanthropist Cynthia Fry Gunn a “very special person” in our community.  Ms. Labozetta acknowledged proclamations from Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, State Senator Joe Simitian, and Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss that echoed the importance of Ms. Gunn’s personal and philanthropic contributions.  Ms. Gunn, who served on Family & Children Services’ Board of Directors from 1998-2004, now sits on the Advisory Board and continues to be a passionate advocate for the agency.  Ms. Labozetta thanked Cynthia for her continued dedication to the agency’s work and for her commitment to the well-being of the community through support of education, human services, and the arts.
