Family & Children Services Hosts Free Financial Education Night November 15 in San Jose
- Cesar Anda, Aide to Assemblyman Joe Coto, to Receive Award -

[San Jose] On November 15, Family & Children Services invites Santa Clara County families to Money Matters, a free financial education event made possible in part through the support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The event will feature workshops on topics including budgeting, understanding credit, and the Earned Income Tax Credit, and a resource fair. The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m. at the JTS Northside Community Center in San Jose. Workshop presenters include Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County, Lenders for Community Development, and the Ways to Work Family Loan Program of Family & Children Services. Information will be presented in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

At the event, Cesar Anda, aide to Assemblyman Joe Coto, will receive the National Family Week Advocacy Award. Mr. Anda has volunteered with the Ways to Work Family Loan Program of Family & Children Services since November 2006. He has been a dedicated volunteer on the Ways to Work Loan Committee, where he analyzes loan applications, deciding which applicants are appropriate candidates to receive low-interest loans, thus ensuring the long-term viability of the family loan program. Cesar has been a great advocate for services for families in his role in Assemblyman Coto's office and throughout the community.

National Family Week has been celebrated annually the week of Thanksgiving for more than 30 years. This year it will be celebrated nationwide the week of November 18. The week honors the connections, both within families and from families to their communities, that support and strengthen families. The theme, “Connections Count,” reflects the reality that children live better lives when their families are strong. Families are strong when they live in communities that connect them to economic opportunities, social networks, and services. “Connections” include: economic self-sufficiency, dependable transportation, reliable child care, accessible health care, applicable education and training, and affordable housing.

Nationwide, National Family Week efforts are directed by The Alliance for Children and Families, a nonprofit association representing child-and family-serving organizations in the United States and Canada. National Family Week is supported by The Annie E. Casey Foundation. In 2006, The President of the United States, 39 governors, and more than 140 mayors proclaimed National Family Week. Locally, the City of San Jose and City of Palo Alto are issuing proclamations in support of National Family Week 2007.

”Family & Children Services is glad to present this first-time event to connect families with resources to help them increase their financial knowledge and access available services. I am also delighted to honor Cesar Anda, who is a tremendous advocate for families in our community,” said Jim Dale, program director of the Santa Clara County Ways to Work Family Loan Program.

For additional information, contact Family & Children Services at 408-374-9220 x 205 or info@fcservices.org, or visit www.fcservices.org. Reservations are not needed. The Northside Community Center is located at 488 N. 6th Street, cross street Empire, in San Jose. Information at the event will be presented in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
