Culturally-sensitive mental health care for LGBTQ youth honored by LACY Program
Family & Children Services is honored to have been selected by the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley's LACY (Legal Advocates of Children and Youth) Program as a 2009 Honoree for our pioneering mental heath services program for youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) or who are questioning their sexual identity. Our partner in this program is the Billy De Frank LGBT Center.
Youth who identify as Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, or Bisexual or who are questioning their sexual identity are at greater risk for depression, self-harming behavior, and suicide. With funding from the County of Santa Clara, Family & Children Services is delighted to have increased support services for youth throughout the county over the last year.
This contract represents a significant and innovative expansion of support services designed specifically for youth between the ages of 16 and 25 ("transition age youth") who identify as LGBT or who are questioning their sexual identity. The program brings together Family & Children Services' expertise in mental health care and case management and Billy De Frank Center's expertise in outreach, education, and youth programming.
In the spring of 2009, the program opened a new youth drop-in center at the Billy DeFrank LGBT Center. This San Jose drop-in center offers a variety of resources to connect youth who often feel isolated to a network of support. The center has been bustling since opening its doors.
