Raising Funds to Support Children, Youth, & Adults

In May, three special events were held to raise funds for and awareness of the work of Family & Children Services. Increasing resources for our work with at-risk youth was a particular focus. With discussions of budget reductions for school and social services underway at the state, county, and district levels, our volunteers and guests knew that their gifts would be especially important to the well-being of youth in the months to come.

On May 6th, the Circle of Support Breakfast Committee, co-chaired by Elizabeth Stewart and Lynette Mandal, presented its 7th annual event benefiting Family & Children Services. Guests were moved to both tears and laughter by the award-winning author Mark Salzman, who delivered a keynote presentation entitled: "The Staff Ate My Homework: Reflections on Teaching at Juvenile Hall." His remarks followed a tribute to Eastside College Preparatory School, a private high school that is transforming educational opportunities for youth in East Palo Alto. The generosity of the event's underwriters, led by John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn, and event guests will enhance mental health, case management, and life skills education resources for our youth clients.

The week of May 10th, Barbara Campisi, a dedicated Valle Monte League volunteer, hosted a trunk show benefiting Family & Children Services. The show featured the spring collection of Nina McLemore, a New York designer who founded Liz Claiborne Accessories earlier in her career. Ms. Campisi, who is the local representative for Nina McLemore, introduced many new customers to the beautiful line.

On May 17th, we were out on the green with the inaugural Family & Children Services Golf Classic. Co-chaired by Praveen Mandal and Jim Welsh, this event brought more than 120 golfers to the Los Altos Golf & Country Club for a special day of golf. Former football stars Roger Craig, Ronnie Lott, Harris Barton, David Wright, and David Casper joined us for the event. The day began with a delicious lunch provided by First & Main Sports Lounge in Los Altos and concluded with dinner, music, and a silent auction. A few golfers came close, but no one took home the keys to the hole-in-one prize, a Tesla Roadster!

These events are possible through the dedication and hard work of our event committee volunteers and the generous investment of our underwriters, in-kind contributors. Thank you to everyone who helped to raise funds to build the strength, safety, and self-sufficiency of local kids, teens, and adults!
