A Skills Development Class Aimed at Empowering Individuals to Better Manage Stress
Offered: Fall 2008
Mindfulness has been defined as the process of bringing a specific quality of attention to one’s present experience. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) has over 20 years of clinical studies demonstrating its value in bringing about real and lasting change in participants’ lives. Individuals can benefit across a range of challenges in their lives from managing chronic pain or physical illness to alleviating symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, sleep and mood disturbances, and more.
MBSR includes mindful breathing and meditation while using concepts such as cultivating a beginner’s mind, practicing patience and non-judgment (of self and others), acknowledgement/ acceptance (of pain, stress, issues), and remembering how to “just be” in the moment without resisting, judging or changing anything. Committing to the skills class and to practicing mindfulness in daily life can help individuals experience:
- Less of the harmful effects of stress
- Decreased anxiety and depression
- Increase in well-being and life satisfaction
- More restful sleep and better awareness of their body
- Over time, a decrease in the amount of medications used for pain issues or other health concerns like high blood pressure
