Mental Health Services and Staff Training at Local Schools

Sometimes emotional problems, family issues, and worries interfere with a student's ability to learn. We partner with teachers and school staff to bring mental health care to children on-campus at no cost to the children’s families. Because donations and grants secured by Family & Children Services fill in the gap between the school contract and the real cost of services, schools are able to afford to expand their mental health services for students.

Services:

Counseling (on-campus)
Family & Children Services has therapists on-site at a variety of public and private elementary, junior high, and high schools. Our therapists based at schools operate as part of the school staff, providing free counseling for students, advising teachers and staff, and serving as a resource for parents. Depending on the agreement with the school, therapists are on-campus anywhere from an afternoon each week to full-time.

In addition to one-to-one counseling, therapists organize support groups when appropriate.

Counseling (off-campus for students)
Students in San Mateo County with Medi-Cal can request free counseling at Family & Children Services through San Mateo County Access. Students in Santa Clara County have access to free sessions through a contract between Family & Children Services and Palo Alto Unified School District. Our counseling services are open to the public for children, teens, adults, and families. more

DEAF (Dealing Effectively with Abuse in Families)
Counseling and child abuse prevention services for children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing and their families. more
Early Childhood Services (ECS)
Early detection and intervention for children and their families can help prevent long-term and lasting problems. Childcare staff may need help on identifying problems, establishing appropriate responses to difficulties, and communicating with parents about problems and solutions. Childcare centers that participate in ECS, receive mental health, violence prevention, and family support services, as well as staff training. more
Families and Schools Together (FAST)
A school-based, family-focused program, FAST increases self-esteem and improves the school performance of elementary and middle school children considered at-risk. Specific goals include promoting school success, enhancing family bonding and functioning, preventing substance abuse by the child and family, and reducing the stress that parents and children experience in their daily lives. This program is currently offered at schools in the Franklin-McKinley School District. more
